Supporting Youth Mental Health
City of Hamilton providing over $7,000 for Eagle’s Nest Emoticon program in Waterdown
Eagles Nest, a mental health charity, has supported individuals in the provision of mental health services for over 20 years. Through the Hope Centre at 606 Dundas Street East in Waterdown, Eagle’s Nest provides affordable mental health services to residents of Waterdown and Flamborough more broadly. Its services include individual and group therapeutic counselling for people of all ages, with a particular focus on children.
To support youth mental health, Eagle’s Nest offers the Emoticon program. Delivered in an eight-week course, across two age groups (6-8 and 9-11 year olds), children are helped in identifying, understanding, and managing their emotions. Through games, conversation and weekly challenges, the Emoticon program explores happiness, anger, fear, anxiety, guilt, sadness and anticipation. Children leave the group with a better understanding of and strategies to engage with their emotions. Each child begins with an independent intake session with a trained therapist to customize the program.
Early intervention with the right supports greatly assists young people in becoming healthier adults. That’s one of the reasons why the City of Hamilton recently approved over $7,000 in financial support for Eagle’s Nest, for the delivery of youth mental health services in the community. Specifically, Eagle’s Nest will use the funding to update their Emoticon curriculum, develop and share a Parent/Caregiver Resource Guide, and update their program equipment, to enhance their delivery of children’s community mental health services.
