Free trees & compost for residential planting

‍Starting in late April and continuing into May, there are a number of opportunities to ameliorate your property

Free tree give-a-way‍ ‍

The City of Hamilton provides native shade trees and/or shrubs to residents. You need to be a resident of the City of Hamilton to qualify, and you must plant the tree on your private property located in the City of Hamilton, preferably at the side or back of your home. Trees are approximately 1 metre tall.

A variety of native tree and shrub species being given away. Pre-register and pick-up your tree or shrub at one of the pick-up locations:

Giveaway Details and Locations:

  • Two (2) trees per property. Pre-registration required.

  • Must present driver’s license or property tax bill.

  • Native shade trees and shrubs are available.

  • Pick up your tree. Rain or shine.

  • Homeowner is responsible to plant, water and maintain the private tree.

Free compost give-a-way at Joe Sams Park on April 25

‍Bring your own pails, shovels, and elbow grease, as the City of Hamilton is giving away compost for your lawn, garden, and plants. 

After leaf and yard waste is picked up at the curb through the Curbside Yard Waste Collection Program, the City processes it and turns it into nutrient-rich compost. Now, it’s time to give that compost back to residents. 

Giveaway Details and Locations:

  • You must bring your own shovels and containers

  • 15-minute time limit loading

  • Compost is for residents only and not available for commercial use
