Christmas tree collection January 5-16

Christmas trees will be collected curbside, along with garbage and recycling, starting this week. From January 5 – 16, you can put out natural trees no longer than 2.1m (6.9 ft) for pickup on your collection day. If you have a larger tree, please cut it in half.

Make sure to remove all decorations including lights, tinsel and stands before placing your tree at the curb. Natural wreaths will also be collected alongside Christmas trees. If you have a Christmas tree for disposal after the second week of January, you can bring your tree to a Community Recycling Centre for free.

Donate to RBG

If you are looking for another option for your old tree, consider donating it to the Royal Botanical Gardens. RBG is collecting 3000 trees to be strategically placed in various stream-restoration projects around aquatic ecosystems. Since the RBG began this project, over 175,000 trees have been repurposed and placed into the banks of the Chedoke and Grindstone Creeks.

As more trees are added, the riverbanks become fortified and stabilized, which help channel the flow of water during high-water events. Further, the trees facilitate the regrowth of marsh plants and create habitat for native fish and wildlife.

If you can donate your Christmas tree, RBG is asking community members to pre-register the donation, and then drop off the tree at the scheduled drop off point, either at the Arboretum or the Grindstone Marshes Trailhead.
